Not only do they improve speed and performance by driving both drive wheels instead of just one, Wavetrac differentials are also the solution to a problem many MINI drivers experience – loss of drive during zero or near-zero axle-load conditions. This is experienced during normal, everyday driving, but is especially detrimental when driving in extreme conditions.
Zero or near-zero axle loads occurs when there is “no-load” applied through the drivetrain, due to one of the drive wheels being nearly or fully lifted off of the ground, often due to high speed corner turning. When this occurs, the majority of gear differentials cause power to be lost to the wheel still on the floor (the gripping wheel) – this is where Wavetrac differentials differ.
The innovative design of Wavetrac differentials mean that they react differently in these zero axle-load conditions. Instead of stopping any power going to the gripping wheel, each side gear in the differential begins to turn at different speeds, creating enough internal load to counteract the zero axle-load, keeping the power in the gripping wheel, improving speed, stability and grip in low traction conditions.

Wavetrac differentials are manufactured, as standard, with carbon-fibre bias plates for superb all-round performance and high durability, unlike other differentials, resulting in consistent performance. The body of the differentials are made using case-hardened steel billet, and internal gears from high strength 9310 alloy steel.
